A number of states are not yet in compliance and were granted an extension for REAL ID implementation. Federal agencies will accept driver's licenses and identification cards from non-compliant states at federal buildings, nuclear power plants, and federally regulated commercial aircraft until October 10, 2018.

It is important to keep in mind that U.S. passports serve as government compliant documentation for domestic as well as international air travel. If your state remains non-compliant or you haven’t updated your driver’s license, the best solution is to carry your passport.

Citizens must update their old state driver’s license for new REAL ID’s by October 1, 2020. In most states, a gold or black star in the top part of the card means it is compliant.

The only non-compliant U.S. state or territory not granted an extension was American Samoa. Driver’s licenses from American Samoa will not be accepted. A U.S. passport is required for air travel.

Alabama Compliant

Alaska Compliant

Alaska is compliant with the REAL ID Act. Federal agencies can accept driver’s licenses and identification cards from Alaska at Federal facilities and nuclear power plants, and they can be used to board domestic commercial flights.

American Samoa Not Compliant

American Samoa is not in compliance with the REAL ID Act and Federal agencies will not accept driver’s licenses and identification cards from American Samoa as of February 5, 2018.

Arizona Compliant

Arizona is compliant with the REAL ID Act. Federal agencies can accept driver’s licenses and identification cards from Arizona at Federal facilities and nuclear power plants, and they can be used to board domestic commercial flights.

Arkansas Compliant

Arkansas is compliant with the REAL ID Act. Federal agencies can accept driver’s licenses and identification cards from Arkansas at Federal facilities and nuclear power plants, and they can be used to board domestic commercial flights.
